DigitalGrit: The #1 Best Place to Work in NJ (Officially)

That's right. We're the best. 

At a dinner last night hosted by NJBiz, the Best Places to Work in NJ were formally announced. All 50 companies on the list were invited to attend -- the top 25 large companies, and the top 25 mid-sized companies.

As co-founder Dan Lynn tells it, he was happy to not be number 25 in our category. When numbers 25-12 had be announced, and we were nearing the top 10, Dan thought, "please let us *not* be number 11."

Then, as the top five approached, Dan thought, "I don't want to be number 6. "

The top 5 were read off, down to number two. (Guess what Dan was thinking then...)

As the number two company in our category approached the podium, Dan could have sworn he saw an "aw, shucks" gesture. "No one remembers the number two," thought Dan."

Joel Macaluso leaned over to Dan and said, "Maybe they forgot to include us."

We just couldn't believe that, in our first year of eligibility, we could possibly be the top company to work for in New Jersey.

But we were. Are.

And we'll have a press release about it soon!!!

Congrats to eveyrone on our team -- especially co-founders Dan Lynn and Scott Goldthwaite.

I think we all already knew that we were working for the best company in NJ -- but it's especially nice for these two to be recognized for their commitment to making DigitalGrit great for us -- and our clients.

From Blogosphere to Vlogosphere

What a different a season makes in this industry.

I thought I was pretty hip to industry terminology..."blogosphere," "podcasting" -- it's all part of the jargon so many of us (a bit pretentiously) hear or use everyday.

Admittedly, I didn't know what "vlogging" was.

Not only do I need to learn that, I certainly need to try it. Although...if I could speak really well, I probably wouldn't need to write so much.

BusinessWeek on Blogs: "Not a Business Elective"

"Go ahead and bellyache about blogs. But you cannot afford to close your eyes to them, because they're simply the most explosive outbreak in the information world since the Internet itself. And they're going to shake up just about every business -- including yours. It doesn't matter whether you're shipping paper clips, pork bellies, or videos of Britney in a bikini, blogs are a phenomenon that you cannot ignore, postpone, or delegate. Given the changes barreling down upon us, blogs are not a business elective. They're a prerequisite. (And yes, that goes for us, too.)"

DMA Search Marketing Forum

After a grueling two-hour drive in, I finally made it to the DMA's Search Marketing Forum just before it began. (Which was helpful, considering we were sponsoring and I had our marketing materials in my car!)

The event, which was held at the Marriott Marquis in NYC, was better attended than I'd expected, and it went really well. I was impressed by the high-level of the content provided -- this was definitely a 200-300 level course. I kind of pity any newbies who decided to go, in fact.

Our own, brilliant Scott Delea stole the show, of course. He led a panel with Diane Rinaldo of Yahoo Search Marketing (formerly Overture. And don't call it Overture again!), Brett Goffin of Google, and Pattiann McAdams of Avon. The four of them fairly overwhelmed the crowd with solid info. 

Pattiann brought up some interesting points about brand protection online, and shared the fact that Avon has dropped its keyword buy from several thousand to about fifty. They found that it wasn't worthwhile to buy keywords like "eyeliner" and "lipstick." When people are searching for Avon products, the keyword they tend to use is - AVON.

A good reminder to all to test, test, test  - and track and analyze your results. She probably saved Avon a fortune with that nugget.

There were other useful sessions throughout the day, but the one I really wanted to see was a late addition on RSS & blogging and their affect on SEO. Sadly, I had to bolt out before it began, but I'll be emailing Amanda Watlington, who led the session, for a copy of her presentation.
